Placing a phonograph

  1. Use the phonograph item from your bags. You'll carry the cabinet on one arm, with a translucent copy hovering where it would land.
  2. Walk to position it, and turn it with the swing keys.
  3. Hold [R] to set it down — or press [Backspace] to put it away.

Nothing is spent until it lands

Cancel or walk away and the item never leaves your bags.

Picking one up

Stand at a cabinet you're allowed to take and hold [Backspace]. It goes back into your bags — needle lifted, queue cleared.

You can't take one while another player is standing right next to it, and map-fixed cabinets (saloon decks) can never be taken.

The deck

Press [R] at any phonograph that answers to you.

Good to know

  • Sound fades with distance. Stand closer to hear more.
  • Everyone is in sync. Ride into town mid-song and you'll hear the song mid-song — the server keeps every listener on the same second.
  • There's a short cooldown between play requests, and a limit on how many queue slots one person can fill.
  • If the deck refuses you, the message says why: too far away, not your deck, the queue is full, the link was rejected, or the music has been silenced by the law.

If you can't hear anything

Distance first — the default audible range is 15 metres.

If you're standing right next to it and still hear nothing, check your own game audio. RedM's "mute audio of unfocused game" setting is the usual culprit, along with the game volume sliders.

Age-restricted, region-locked and embed-disabled YouTube videos cannot play in an embedded player. That is a YouTube-side restriction, not something the server can override — the deck reports the failure and moves on to the next queued track by itself.

If it's rejected before anything starts, the server turned the link down: it wasn't http(s), it was too long, it contained whitespace, or its host isn't on the server's allowlist.
